On a recent trip to Japan, I spent a morning visiting the Tsukiji Fish Market (築地市場, Tsukiji shijō) in Tokyo. In preparations for the 2020 Olympics in Japan, I found out that the market will be moving to a new location later this year, which made this visit even more pressing.
In order to see the live auction, visitors line up as early as 4am to wait in line for a sixty person admittance. Instead of waiting in line, I got in around 5:30am and luckily managed to mosey my way deep into the market, getting a close-up look of the work that goes on nearby the auctions.
The market is located in Tsukiji in central Tokyo, between the Sumida River and the upmarket Ginza shopping district. ■
