In June 2015, a group of friends and I went to Iceland for my 30th birthday. I visited Iceland the year before with Vince and Alvin from Studio Faculty for our press check visit at Oddi Printing in preparation for our first book, Faculty Department. With the focus of the first trip spent primarily on the press check, the trip went by too quickly and left me wanting to come back for more.
Starting off in Reykjavik, we made our way south to where our house was located. During this time of the year, the sun just beamed throughout the day and lingered in the late mornings and afternoons, giving us about twenty hours of daylight. The amount of light took some time to get used to, one night we had a late dinner at 3am. It seemed we kept our normal New York schedule despite the time difference.
One of the most memorable parts of the trip was off-roading through a river bed. Growing up in a city my whole life, I’ve never really experienced the vast beauty of open landscapes like you see in Iceland. On our way back, we made our last pit stop at the Blue Lagoon before catching our flights back to New York. Having made the same stop before the airport during my last visit, it’s now a tradition before leaving.
10 days was just the perfect time for this trip, but I’m looking forward to seeing the other parts of the island next time around.
